Renowned as a picturesque picnic spot, Chakrata in Dehradun District of Uttarakhand State of India is a hill station and a famed tourist destination located at an altitude of about 7000 ft above the sea level. The town was known earlier as Jaunsar bawar, a small hamlet of Jaunsari tribe.

Sightseeing

Hilmiri Neck:

Chilmiri Neck is the peak point in Chakrata where the mess and quarters of military cantonment are located. The view of the scenic verdant land and dense forests from Chilmiri Neck leave an unforgettable impact. It is an ideal place for bird watching and butterflies of different colors are in plenty here. The massive Himalayan peaks like Rohini Peak, Swarga Peak and the Banderpoonch are distinctly visible from here. 5 km from hotel Snow View, Chakrata. Almost beauty of the nature can be sighted from here.

Deoban (Devban):

Situated 16 km from Chakrata, Deoban is located in the hilly terrains of Chakrata covering the elevation from 2,200 m to 3,025 m above sea level. Deoban is the perfect spot in Chakrata from where you can see the captivating and eye feasting views of the enchanting Himalayan range.

Tiger Falls:

Tiger falls is the main attraction in Chakrata 20 km from Chakrata. This mesmerizing waterfall can be reached by an easy 5 km trek with rhododendron and oak trees everywhere. The adventurous trek to the Tiger Fall is an enthralling experience. Tiger falls is one of the highest waterfalls in India falling from a height of about 312 ft. This is an ideal place for picnicking and doing photography. The scattered drops of this majestic waterfall are collected in a small pond making it a gorgeous location for taking a bath.

Kalsi:

Ashoka Pillar Rock Edict built in 450 B.C. at Kalsi represents the post-warfare era when king Ashoka converted himself to the Buddhist faith. The edicts ever aimed at the moral elevation of his people. An edict at Kalsi made up of quartz is 10 ft in length and 8 ft in breadth. This spiritual site is preserved by the National Archaeological Department as this edict has great historical significance.

Ram Tall Horticulture Garden:

Ram tall or Ram tall Horticulture Garden is located on beautiful sloppy hills at chakrata Mussoorie road. A beautiful natural pond, worth seen sceneries and apple garden making it an ideal picnic spot.

Kanasar:

28 km from Chakrata. A forest of deodar or pine. The deodar trees here said to have the largest trunk in Asia.Mundali, Kimona Water Fall, Budher Forest, Budher Cave 25 km and Thana Danda Peak are other popular tourist places in the vicinity of Chakrata.

By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Chakrata. It is situated 113kms from Chakrata. Taxis are easily available from Jolly Grant Airport to Chakrata. Jolly Grant Airport is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. Chakrata is well connected by motorable roads with Jolly Grant Airport.

By Train: The nearest railway station to Chakrata is situated in Dehradun. The distance from Dehradun to Chakrata is 87km. Taxis and buses are easily available from Dehradun to Chakrata. The road to Chakrata from Dehradun is motorable. Dehradun is well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Shatabdi Express and Mussoorie Express are the two major trains connecting Dehradun with major cities of India. Dehradun has excellent rail network with all important cities like Amritsar, Howrah, Bombay, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi etc.

By Road: Chakrata is well connected with motorable roads. Luxury and normal Buses to Mussoorie, Dehradun and Chakrata are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi. Buses and Taxis to Chakrata are easily available from major destinations of Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand state. Chakrata is also well connected by motorable roads with Himachal Pradesh.

One can either drive or take a taxi to Chakrata. It is about 4 hrs drive from Dehra Dun and 3 hrs from Ponta Sahib. There are two ways of going there, the traditional one is through Herbertpur and Kalsi 98 km and the other is through Mussorie and Yamuna Bridge 100 km.
