Joshimath is the winter headquarters of the Badrinath and Kedarnath Temple Committee and the seat of Jagatguru Shankaracharya of Joythirmath. The ancient Kalpavariksh from where Sri Sankara Bhagvatpada had the vision of the Joyti of Badrinath and the place of Laxmi Narashima are here. The Narshimha Badri is the ancient temple and the Shankara Gaddi of Jagatguru is kept here for the winters. Bhavishya Badri and Tapovan are places of interest for pilgrims.

Sightseeing

Narasimha Temple:

located at Joshimath, this renowned abode of Lord Narasimha is said to be about 1200 years old. Lord Narasimha (half man & half lion) was the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In this Temple, Lord Narasimha is seen in the ‘Padmasana Posture’.

Kalpavriksh (Divine Tree):

Kalpavriksh has been regarded as divine and spiritual tree in Indian history. As per the Hindu scriptures, Adi Jagatguru Shankaracharya sat under this tree and worshipped Lord Shiva. Kalpavriksh is an old Mulberry tree having a lot of historical, holy and religious significance in India. Located at Joshimath, Kalpavriksha is believed to be 1200 years old and is known by the name of kalpatru. Mysteriously, Kalpavriksha remains evergreen throughout the year and never sheds a single leaf by itself.

Vasudeva temple:

Located 30 yards away from Narasimha Temple, Vasudeva Temple is dedicated to another incarnation of Lord Vishnu. One the most renowned Vishnu temple of North India, it is considered extremely sacred by ‘Alavars’ Vaishnavite saints from Tamil Nadu.

Treks around Joshimath

Chopta:

Chopta is popularly known as Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand. The number of tourists visiting Chopta has increased in recent years and the region has become a popular vacation spot for adventure lovers and explorers. Tungnath is the highest temple of Lord Shiva situated only 3.5 km away from Chopta which should be covered on foot or by pony. Chopta is situated 92 km from Joshimath.

Gopeshwar:

There are several ancient temples in Gopeshwar with great religious importance. The main attractions are the ancient temple of Lord Shiva, Vaitarni Kund and the splendid views of the Himalayas. Trek to Rudranath commences from Saggar which is situated 5 km. ahead from Gopeshw ar on Guptkashi-Gopeshwar road. Gopeshwar has situated 58 km from Joshimath.
